Garrett Smith collects third-career Spring Nationals victory at Rockcastle Speedway
With plans for a two-step through the Bluegrass State, Garrett Smith followed the Schaeffer's Oil Spring Nationals to Rockcastle Speedway (Mount Vernon, Ky.) on Friday afternoon as the tour made it's debut at the facility with a $7,553-to-win event.
Topping the speed charts in his qualifying group, Smith automatically locked himself into the 40-lap main event and was slated to start from the outside pole. Leading early in the Finn Watson Memorial, Garrett was challenged by Sam Seawright as the pair threw multiple sliders battling for the top spot. Seawright eventually hit the wall and took himself out of contention which paved the way for Garrett to cruise to his third-career victory with the series and the $7,553 payday. Garrett was joined by Cory Hedgecock and Jimmy Owens on the podium.
Riding the momemtum into Saturday's $10,053-to-win show, Garrett ran runner-up in his heat race at Lake Cumberland Speedway (Somerset, Ky.) and started third in the Johnny Wheeler Memorial. Making his way to the front, Smith battled Cory Hedgecock for the lead before Jimmy Owens snuck by both of them. Garrett settled for a runner-up finish behind Owens while Justin Ratliff completed the podium.
The successful weekend left Garrett leading the Spring Nationals point standings.
